At best for the coming decades, we will see a mix of manually (personally owned) and automated (shared) cars. Problem is that they don't quite mix. Slow, cautiously moving AVs will cause more traffic jams (as they already do in SF), as providers who exploit them don't want to be held liable for accidents. Extra problematic is that providers use robo taxis that are too big for the average 1.2 passenger displaced. Including the computing power (equals GWh emissions) needed and the fact that AVs will barely be able to replace ownership cars (objects of TLC, collecting, personal pleasure etc.), the environmental consequences are obvious.
