If Ukraine has clearly something to gain? For starters, fast-track to membership of the EU. Economically beneficial as well as militarily (the EU will implicitely take over Nato's Article 5 responsibility). The Donbas provinces (and the Crimea) will feel pretty stupid being excluded, now having to rely on Russia to determine their socio-economic future. Secondly, there is a larger picture to observe: people are starving, particularly in Africa, since Ukraine harvests have been excluded from the loop of feeding the world. Thirdly, the weaker Russian forces perform on the battlefield, the more likely that Putin will escalate to something more potent like nuclear weapons. Fourthly, coming to some sort of agreement with Russia will speed up the process of rebuilding Ukraine cities and infrastructure (with the explicite condition that frozen Russian assets are to be used for repairs) and for Ukrainians to return home. Last but not least, lives will be saved.
