It's a mess. I go so far as to call the whole autonomous vehicle push not too dissimilar from what Elizabeth Holmes tried to do on her own with Theranos. At least there is a grey zone between an individual company's "fake it until you make it" (Theranos) and the collective sort of wishful thinking pitched by a whole industry. Which type of vehicle is better suited to driverless? Answer: a vehicle that’s less of a safety risk to begin with… This ought to speak for itself, but crazy enough, it isn’t.
