Remember your ‘classics’, the constant rivalry between the two powerful city-states Athens and Sparta on the Greek peninsula in ancient history? Athens stood for democracy, enlightenment, the arts, and Sparta for the disciplined, military state. Since WW1 the U.S. have become both, unprecedented in human history. There has long been an American tradition of staying away from the strife and misery in other parts of the world, so America would be able to keep its nose clean, and become an example for other countries to follow… To cut a long story short, it was former Allied supreme commander and President Dwight Eisenhower who basically warned that after WW2, that had America come out as the most powerful country in the world, politically and militarily, there is a considerable chance that the influence of the U.S. military industrial complex would corrupt politics and start to conflict with democratic interests. In other words, war as an ongoing business.
