Russia has proven to be a very unreliable economic partner. The transition to other energy sources may be painful and very costly, but never again should the EU import oil and gas from Russia. What Putin hasn't count on is the fact that as fossil energy prices have skyrocketed, renewables have come into play at relatively lower expenses. And that will snowball the EU towards energy independence in the not too distant future.
