The magic word for autonomous cars to become successful is… (drum roll) reduce vehicle footprint. Bus companies are too cumbersome to cater to the customer. They need bus stops, operate costly, bulky hardware which is hard to make emission-less, is maybe filled 10–20 percent most of the time and which cannot be made to function autonomously. What I have labeled as ‘smart-mobility devices can do everything what bus companies by definition cannot: door-to-door, just-in-time, on-demand, tailored to individual needs, 24/7.
