The most uncomfortable truth maybe is, and which falls in the "What If?" category, that hadn't the Allies freed Holland, most Dutch would have just continued living and doing busness as sort of a German province within the Dritte Reich. 'We Dutch' sometimes jokingly refer to the 2nd WW as the war in which all Dutch had a relative who risked his life in the resistance. Most Dutch simply don't care enough about their own past to acknowledge for instance the atrocities committed in the former Dutch Indies.
