The solution for driverless is simple: reduce vehicle footprint, smoothen outer shape (get rid of the many blind spots typical for the SUVs and MPVs Waymo and Uber are using). It will be easier for the on-board autonomous tech to detect pedestrians and cyclists, ditto for the ‘driver’ who sits on the vehicle’s curbside. There’s simply more space and time to evade other road users. Wraparound, visor-like canopy will help the person behind the steering wheel stay involved.
