There are a number of matters to observe with the Musk phenomenon. To begin with, I am convinced that he never voted Democrat. He has probably been confronted with so many rules, regulations and bureaucracy in his endeavors, that he associates with civil servants and career politicians spending too much tax payers money and stagnating progress. "Look at me, I managed to bore a tunnel without the usual fuss and redtape, beat NASA at their own game, ditto Detroit which is addicted to government chipping in when U.S. carmaking is in peril yet again." Secondly, and this is something that really deserves attention: nerds or let's say technically oriented people more and more tend to be right-wing. They simply have less understanding let alone patience to contemplate the social and societal consequences of new technology. Thirdly, Trump is easier to flatter and manipulate, which is dangerous since both men bring with them a strong personal cult. I can’t emphasize enough that Nazi-Germany was made possible by utter disdain for Democracy, by personal cults, technocrats and industrialists.
