There will always be egomaniacs like Mussolini, Putin and Trump. The question is how big and persistent the circle of opportunists, enablers and henchmen that surrounds those leaders really is, and whether it can be weakened even dissolved by alternative prospects of conducting policy. Decency is too small a buoy to cling on to when the political rivalry has become existentialist. IMO, too many Republicans think of Trump as the only way that they can stay afloat and relevant. In that sense, you are right.
