Think about it... Our (Christian) morals are based on the idea that there will be some sort of reckoning when we're done. Otherwise few would feel inhibited to commit the heinous crimes some men have done. What keeps us on the righteous path? An inner voice or the thought that 'nothingness' after death isn't 100% sure? Btw, 20 years ago I was brought into a coma for surgery to my back. It took less than 2 seconds to fall into complete nothingness, and less than 2 seconds to come back alive (wake up from the coma after the surgery). I can remember thinking: so this is how it feels to be dead... Utter nothingness. You’re not aware you are no longer there. You can’t even call it ‘liberating’… because that would mean you are aware.
