We have barely scratched the surface yet. There is talk of having glass office buildings generate their own energy through solar cell ‘enriched’ pane glass. The solar cells themselves can become more efficient too by absorbing more solar energy. However, the moment electricity companies start shedding their dependence of fossil energy, they should stop being such humble operators in the whole transitional process, and start forging new alliances to balance out the old vested interests that is leading us nowhere. Take a peek how Silicon Valley does things, might be a good idea. Apple’s iPhone has put the whole telecom and media industry upside down, literally. In the old days, a supplier of a cordless phone considered himself lucky if it featured the brand name of a major phone company… Why should all (venture) capital gravitate towards SV, particularly when so much wishful thinking and engineering is involved?
