Weaken Russia = to secure freedom and democracy. The EU is not too keen on having the Ukraine as a new member. Already way too many concerns with the present Eastern European countries that want to become EU member. That ALL countries would prefer to join the EU and the Western allies and NOT Russia's pathetic "it's my party and I cry if I want to" alliance, says enough. THAT is the inconvenient truth about Putin's Russia.
