“When you tell the reader exactly what a character is thinking and feeling at every turn, you rob them of their ability to actively engage in the text. The fact that Stephen King doesn’t do this is the main reason why his books have reached such a wide audience. He knows how to let people read between the lines. It’s clear from the very first page.” And that is exactly why King detested the idea of using Jack Nicholson in the role of caretaker. From the moment you lay eyes on him, you know for sure that this man -will- derail. It’s just a matter of time. I love Kubrick’s movies, but Stephen King is so right about this, not even mentioning the overacting Nicholson tends to throw in his roles. They should do a remake with a twist, then have Matt Damon play the caretaker.
