Battery Swapping as ‘Fluid’ as Filling up

Interesting question is whether battery swapping can play a major role in the acceptance of electro-mobility, and having more EVs on the road and battery swapping can enhance each other significantly. We’re talking affordability, economy of scale, stakeholders… becoming the industry standard.

If Battery Swapping is to become THE service (BaaS) - The one-size fits all principle…

We are already familiar with battery swapping in mopeds and rickshaws. The benefit of course is split-pricing (vehicle purchase and battery lease kept separate) and a battery swap as easy as refueling at a gas station. It’s why Shell and BP have shown interest in this. Use a standard-size battery means that you don’t need to have various types and sizes up to 1200 lb in stock for all sorts of EVs. No sense in having all your capital stuck in those. After all, you don’t keep twenty grades of gasoline in storage tanks for different customers. Simple: the bigger the EV, the more batteries. It’s like with RC toy cars. That should or may bring battery (or electronics) producers like Panasonic to enter the EV market themselves. For a lightweight EV, the standard-size battery suffices — see below. Click to enlarge.
